STONEBRIDGE WATCHES SAYS...
The Seiko Lord Matic occupies a fascinating place in Seiko's history. Produced during one of the company's most innovative periods, the Lord Matic range offered exceptional quality, sophisticated movements and refined styling that bridged the gap between everyday watches and Seiko's higher-end offerings. Today, these watches are increasingly appreciated by collectors seeking authentic vintage Japanese watchmaking with character, quality and understated elegance.
This particular example is a highly attractive Lord Matic 5601-9000 dating from 1971. Its beautifully textured silver linen dial is complemented by applied Arabic numerals, creating a distinctive and sophisticated appearance that sets it apart from the more commonly encountered baton-marker variants. The clean symmetry of the no-date layout further enhances the design, allowing the dial texture and detailing to take centre stage.
Measuring 36mm, the stainless steel case strikes an ideal balance between vintage proportions and modern wearability. The slim profile and monocoque construction allow the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist, making it equally suited to everyday wear or more formal occasions.
Powering the watch is Seiko's respected Calibre 5601A automatic movement. Featuring 23 jewels and hacking seconds, the movement delivers reliable performance and reflects the engineering quality that helped establish Seiko's reputation during this era.
This example has recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul, including the replacement of the mainspring and crystal. The movement is currently performing at approximately +8 seconds per day according to testing, providing excellent accuracy for a watch of this age. The watch is further enhanced by its original Seiko Lord Matic signed bracelet, a feature that is becoming increasingly difficult to find on surviving examples.
Condition is excellent throughout. The linen dial remains beautifully preserved, the case retains its elegant proportions, and the caseback engravings remain crisp and well defined. Taken as a whole, this is a particularly honest and well-preserved example of an increasingly sought-after vintage Seiko.
At Stonebridge Watches, we have always had a particular appreciation for watches that offer genuine quality and character without relying on a famous name alone. This Lord Matic embodies exactly that philosophy. Its combination of originality, documented servicing, elegant proportions and distinctive linen dial make it one of those rare vintage watches that feels special the moment it is on the wrist. As examples of this quality become increasingly difficult to source, we believe this represents an outstanding opportunity to own one of Seiko's most charming and underrated vintage classics.
