STONEBRIDGE WATCHES SAYS...
Vintage 1974 Seiko Lord Matic Blue Gradient Dial
Some vintage watches immediately catch the eye, and this beautiful 1974 Seiko Lord Matic is certainly one of them. With its magnificent blue gradient dial, beautifully presented stainless steel case and elegant proportions, this is a particularly striking example of one of Seiko's most respected vintage automatic collections.
The outstanding feature is undoubtedly the dial. Finished in a rich, captivating shade of blue, its wonderful sunburst effect creates an almost three-dimensional appearance as the colour changes with the light. Deep midnight blue around the outer edges gradually gives way to vibrant electric blue towards the centre, creating a remarkable sense of depth and character. The slender silver-tone hands and applied baton hour markers complement the dial beautifully, while the discreet day and date display adds everyday practicality without compromising its elegant appearance.
Manufactured in September 1974, this Lord Matic, reference 5606-8090, represents an interesting period in Seiko's watchmaking history. At its heart is the highly regarded 25-jewel Calibre 5606 automatic movement, part of Seiko's celebrated 56-series family, which shares its engineering heritage with movements developed for certain King Seiko and Grand Seiko models. Featuring automatic and manual winding, hacking seconds and a convenient day/date quickset function, it combines traditional Japanese mechanical craftsmanship with practical everyday usability.
Condition and presentation are particularly impressive for a watch now more than 50 years old. The stainless steel case has previously been professionally refinished, restoring its attractive polished surfaces and distinctive angular lugs. A replacement crystal provides excellent clarity, allowing the extraordinary blue dial to be appreciated without distraction. The movement has also been inspected and its accuracy adjusted, with the winding, hand-setting and calendar functions reported to be operating correctly. As with any vintage timepiece, minor age-related imperfections may remain, but the overall appearance is exceptionally attractive.
Measuring a very wearable 36mm excluding the crown, this Lord Matic offers beautifully balanced vintage proportions. Its elegant stainless steel case is complemented by a black leather strap with a Seiko-signed buckle, creating a sophisticated combination that looks equally at home with formal or casual clothing.
Although the original box and papers are no longer present, this watch will be supplied in a special Stonebridge Watches presentation box, making it an appealing choice for a collector, vintage Seiko enthusiast or someone searching for a distinctive and memorable gift. It is also accompanied by our six-month warranty.
''Why We Chose This Watch''
Every so often, we encounter a vintage watch that simply stands out from the crowd, and this particular Lord Matic was one of those occasions. We have always had a particular weakness for beautiful blue dials, but the extraordinary depth of colour, striking sunburst finish and superb overall presentation of this example made it especially difficult to resist.
It was one of those opportunities we simply couldn't turn down. We believe that the finest vintage watches should be appreciated not only for their mechanical heritage, but also for their individual character and beauty. This wonderful 1974 Seiko captures both qualities perfectly, and we are genuinely delighted to offer it as part of our carefully selected collection at Stonebridge Watches..
