STONEBRIDGE WATCHES SAYS...
A beautifully understated vintage Seiko Chariot Quartz, dating to September 1975, featuring an elegant slate grey dial and a distinctive stainless steel cushion-shaped case. This attractive example captures the refined, minimalist styling of the 1970s, combining Japanese precision with a timeless design that remains just as appealing today.
The dial is undoubtedly the highlight of this particular watch. Finished in a sophisticated dark slate grey with subtle blue undertones, its appearance changes gently according to the lighting, occasionally revealing a cooler blue-grey character. The beautifully restrained design features applied silver-tone baton hour markers, slender matching hands and the Seiko Quartz signature positioned beneath 12 o'clock. A discreet decorative emblem above 6 o'clock completes the wonderfully balanced dial, giving the watch a distinctive vintage character without compromising its simplicity.
The polished stainless steel case features an attractive rounded-square profile, with gently curved sides and elegant integrated lugs that give the watch considerably more wrist presence than its approximately 30mm width might suggest. Its proportions are particularly well suited to those who appreciate the smaller, more refined dress watches of the period. As illustrated in our wrist photographs, the cushion-shaped design sits beautifully on the wrist and offers a stylish alternative to a conventional round watch.
Inside is Seiko's Calibre 4130 quartz movement, reflecting the company's pioneering role in the development of quartz watchmaking during the 1970s. With its straightforward two-hand configuration, this is a watch that places the emphasis firmly on elegance, simplicity and practical everyday timekeeping.
The watch is presented in very good vintage condition, particularly considering its age of approximately 50 years. The dial remains attractive and well preserved, while the stainless steel case retains a pleasing polished finish with some light surface marks consistent with careful use over the decades. These minor signs of age are entirely in keeping with its vintage character and do little to detract from its overall appearance.
To complement the understated dial and polished steel case, we have fitted a new brown leather strap with contrasting stitching, finished with a Seiko-signed stainless steel buckle. The warm leather provides a particularly attractive contrast against the cool slate grey dial, creating a classic combination equally suited to smart or casual wear.
From Stonebridge Watches
We are particularly fond of vintage Seiko watches from the 1970s, and this Chariot Quartz is a fine illustration of why. Its appeal lies not in unnecessary complications or elaborate decoration, but in the quality of its design, the beautifully balanced dial and the distinctive proportions of its cushion-shaped case. The slate grey finish is especially attractive, offering something a little different from the more familiar silver and white dials of the period.
For anyone seeking an elegant, individual vintage dress watch with genuine 1970s character, this is a charming example. Beautifully presented on its new leather strap with Seiko-signed buckle, it represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a distinctive piece of Seiko's quartz watchmaking heritage at an accessible price.
Supplied with our six-month Stonebridge Watches warranty.
