STONEBRIDGE WATCHES SAYS...
Dating from circa 1967, this superb Seiko Skyliner 6220-8010 is a particularly attractive example of Seikos classic mid-century dress watch design. With its beautifully balanced proportions, elegant silver dial and clean stainless steel case, it has a wonderfully understated appearance that remains just as wearable today as it was when new.
The silver sunburst dial is the highlight of the watch, displaying a subtle change in tone as it catches the light. Applied baton hour markers are complemented by slender polished hands and a central seconds hand, while the beautifully scripted Seiko Skyliner signature gives the dial a distinctive period character. The simple three-hand layout is exceptionally clean, with no date window to interrupt the symmetry.
At approximately 36mm excluding the crown, the stainless steel case is an excellent size for a vintage dress watch. It has noticeably more presence than many watches of the period while retaining the slim, refined proportions for which the Skyliner is known. The angular lugs and narrow polished bezel further emphasise the generous dial and give the watch an elegant appearance on the wrist.
Inside is Seikos 21-jewel calibre 6220 manual-wind movement. Winding the watch by hand forms part of the charm of owning a mechanical watch from this era and, without the additional complexity of an automatic winding mechanism or calendar, the Skyliner remains a wonderfully pure expression of traditional Japanese watchmaking.
This example is presented in excellent vintage condition and has been fitted with a new leather strap together with a signed Seiko buckle, completing the watch particularly well.
The Seiko Skyliner represents an increasingly appreciated period in the company's history, combining restrained Japanese design with traditional mechanical watchmaking. With its desirable 36mm case, exceptionally clean silver dial and classic hand-wound movement, this is a beautiful vintage Seiko that can be worn equally comfortably as an everyday watch or with more formal attire.
